How do Infants, Toddlers, & Young Children Qualify?

Some children qualify at birth | Sometimes when a child is born, it's evident that early intervention services will be essential in helping the child grow and develop. This is often the case for children who are diagnosed at birth with a specific condition or who experience significant prematurity, very low birth weight, illness, or surgery soon after being born. Even before heading home from the hospital, the child’s parents may be given a referral to their local early intervention office.

Other children qualify due to delays in development | Some children have a relatively routine entry into the world, but may develop more slowly than others, experience set backs, or develop in ways that seem very different from other children. For these children, a visit with a developmental pediatrician and a thorough evaluation may lead to an early intervention referral.

Parents don’t have to wait for a medical provider to make a referral for early intervention. Screenings and evaluations are provided without cost. 

To qualify, your infant or toddler should be a newborn up to age 5 and be experiencing (or is at risk of experiencing due to a diagnosed condition) a developmental delay (cognitive, physical, communication, social, emotional or self-help). If your child qualifies after evaluation, you may select Pediatric Early Intervention & Developmental Services as your family's Early Intervention provider. We would be love to partner with you. Once notified by BabyNet or DDSN that you've selected PEIDS as your provider, we will contact you within one week to complete the process and get started.
